Instead, men and women looking to get nipped and tuck are being enabled to do so in style, with concierge services, shopping sprees and hotel accommodations at the trendiest hot spots included.

America Warms up to Surgery with a Twist

Luxurious plastic surgery centers, such as the one in Beverly Hills, are popping up in some of the most glamorous cities and towns in the U.S. What makes this whole idea even better? You don’t have to be rich and famous to soak up the amenities of such havens. People from all different walks of life and economic backgrounds are choosing to travel for their surgeries and are giving themselves a vacation, as well as a nose job.

What to Expect When Being Pampered

Plastic surgery programs that cater to those who are all about being spoiled usually consist of a concierge who will make reservations, book excursions and plan shopping trips for you and your partners in crime before and after your surgery. Let’s face it, what better way to start your new life with your new lips and cheekbones than with some new presents from Burberry or Chanel?

Gastric Bypass Surgery Saving Lives

Friday, August 24th, 2007

Gastric bypass surgery is a procedure that many obese and overweight people use in order to lose any excess weight they have quickly. New research has found that this surgery, which is becoming more and more popular as obesity increases throughout the United States, is more than a cosmetic procedure it has actually helped save several lives.

Whether you agree or disagree with the gastric bypass surgery procedure, recent research published in The New England Journal of Medicine found that severely obese patients who underwent the surgery reduced their risk of health complications such as coronary heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

According to this study, patients who have had the surgery have a 30-40 percent less chance of dying seven to ten years later than those who didn’t have the operation. So recent celebrities like Star Jones, who recently, and finally, admitted to having the surgery, will continue to grace the covers in of US Weekly in good health for many more years to come.

What Is Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Gastric bypass procedures (GBP) help to treat the severe accumulation of excess weight as fatty tissues and aids in preventing the health problems it causes.
During the procedure, a gastric bypass divides the stomach into a small upper pouch and a larger, lower pouch. It then re-arranges the small intestine so that both of these pouches stay connected to it. The GBP leads to a reduction in the functional volume of the stomach.
For candidates to be considered for this operation, they must be at least 100 pounds overweight with a BMI of over 40. So, for thos looking to lose excess pounds but don’t meet the criteria? Liposuction is the next best option for ridding your body of those unwanted love handles, and according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, nearly 403,684 Americans went under the knife for this procedure last year alone.

Going Under the Knife to Get Ahead

Monday, August 20th, 2007

Plastic surgery has long been associated with those in the upper-class division of America, the group of people who not only care about their looks, but also have bottomless pockets to do something about changing their appearance. However, in the past few years plastic surgery has transformed into something that’s not only appealing to the Paris Hilton’s of the world, but is making even your every day co-workers opt to go under the knife.
In 2006, women had over 10.5 million cosmetic procedures while men had nearly one million operations. Though people are still associating having a better physical appearance with power. Our fascination with whether George Clooney has or hasn’t had a face-lift, not only leaves us curious, but is also forcing more men to go out and get a face-lift of their own. This one time luxury of altering our appearance seems to be within reach of every American, no matter what economic class you belong to. With the majority of patients receiving plastic surgery being working professionals, it seems there’s no better place to look your best than in the workplace.
Women are no longer simply watching and wondering whether the lady buying up the Burberry store has had lip injections or not, instead they’re making an appointment of their own for injections with a side of lipo. However, why is looking physically “better” associated with being more powerful or of a higher class? Donald Trump was recently quoted as saying that if we look better, we’ll be able to attain a better job, which in turn will allow us to make more money and be deemed more important. However, I have to wonder, how will this affect the future of the working world? After Wall Street is full of Barbie’s and Ken’s, how will people achieve power and status next? Well one thing’s for sure, the appearance of class is quickly becoming blurred in the United States and the future is looking…flawless.

Permanent Makeup: Beauty Do Or Don’t?

Friday, August 10th, 2007

Beauty trends seem to be constantly changing, with more and more women desiring to put their best face forward from day to day. With technological advances being made daily, it’s hard to keep up with what makeup is “in” and what should be tossed aside or given to your little cousin for dress up time.

More and more women are reportedly opting to toss out their eyeliner and blush and instead have their makeup tattooed on them. Sound extreme? Well, let’s face it, applying makeup day and night is no easy task when you’re on the go; however, as with all cosmetic treatments, there are always risks to be considered.

According to statistics, 9,533,980 non-surgical cosmetic surgeries were performed in the United States in 2006. For those wanting to enhance their appearance without going under the knife for breast reconstruction or some lipo, non-surgical procedures like getting permanent makeup seems ideal.

This form of cosmetic tattooing is often referred to as micropigmentation or micropigment implantation and is said to have lasting effects on your skin. Not only does getting permanent makeup appeal to women who are tired of consistently re-applying makeup, but the procedure is also helpful to those who have vision impairments and have difficulties putting on makeup as well as to those who have severe allergies to many makeup products.

Permanent makeup can supposedly be applied everywhere from your eyebrows to your lips and can even hide facial scars. However, if this procedure is sounding too ideal it’s because it is, and that is how it is marketed. The FDA has warned patients that there are several risks involved in putting permanent ink on the sensitive skin of your face. Some risks of getting permanent makeup include:

·    Infection
·    Granulomas
·    Keloid formation
·    MRI complications

Putting on makeup daily can be a hassle, I know this first hand, but a common problem surgeons come across when giving the permanent makeup procedure is the patients frustration that the makeup cannot be taken off. They call it permanent for a reason, and unless you are completely content having red lip liner as opposed to brown for the rest of your life, than I would stick to your own makeup brushes and shadows.

Surgery South of the Border

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

It seems that plastic surgery has not only become a universal trend but is now becoming the desired choice for those who want to improve their physical appearance. More than 11.5 million surgeries were performed in America in the last year according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

With so many opting for plastic surgery yearly, the trends and advances being made in the operating world are sometimes mind-boggling. The newest trend for Americans seeking surgery? Heading south of the border.

Many Americans are headed to the second largest city in Mexico, Guadalajara, to get nipped and tucked for a cheaper price than in the states. Apparently plastic surgery is “in” right now in Guadalajara and most hospitals even offer discounted prices to the homeless so they can look their best on the streets. Sound crazy? You’re not the only one that thinks so. The crazier part is, the homeless aren’t the only ones getting liposuction and breast augmentations daily throughout the city.

According to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS) Mexico has one of the fastest growing plastic surgery markets in the world and the number of American’s traveling to cities like Guadalajara has grown dramatically.

American based companies that cater to “out of country plastic surgery” are only encouraging Americans to take the plunge and possibly risk their lives. There are now several companies that connect Americans with bilingual drivers who pick them up from the airport, take them to their scheduled surgeries and drive them to a hotel afterwards. However, no matter how accessible and cheap these surgeries are, as with most things south of the border, safety is a question.

The hospitals in places like Guadalajara aren’t always what we would call “up to par” and several horror stories have been reported regarding botched surgeries. Americans may think they’re getting a bargain when they travel to other countries like Mexico and China for surgeries, though it’s hard to imagine they could be shocked when they come back with one breast larger than the other. When cutting costs, buy cheaper shampoo, not a cheaper nose.
