Fuller Lips for the Future

Friday, January 25th, 2008

This past weekend the American Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery & Reconstructive Surgery sponsored the Latest Advances in Facial Plastic Surgery.

Attending the conference were some of the country’s leading surgeons and experts in facial plastic surgery and reports claim that one of the hot topics was the increasing trend towards lip augmentations in the U.S.
Although breast augmentation surgery, liposuction and facelifts are still among the most requested procedures in America, surgeons and researchers believe that lip augmentations are soon going to be among the most desirable.
Women Opting for Plump Lips
Among the surgeons at the conference was renowned New York Surgeon, Dr. Andrew Jacono who recently published “A New Classification of Lip Zones to Customize Injectable Lip Augmentation.”
In the article Dr. Jacono talks about his exclusive new technique that targets 15 anatomic zones using inject able Hyaluronic Acid-based fillers to deliver fuller lips.
French Lips
In what Dr. Jacono refers to as the “French Lip” method, he injects the Philtral columns, the center of the Cupid ’s bow and the outer half of the lips, in order to roll out the lip and achieve the desired fullness.
“Using this new technique, we can strategically refine, enlarge and reshape the lips to deliver a natural looking pout that is far more desirable than the overstuffed look which currently plagues a host of high profile women from Hollywood to Park Avenue,” explains Dr. Jacono.
According to reports the lip augmentation procedure has been one of the top requested for a lunchtime lip fix. And who doesn’t want Angelina’s pout?

Reconstructing a Smile

Friday, January 4th, 2008

In the past couple of decades the amount of people who have undergone plastic surgery in the United States has risen dramatically. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, an estimated 11.5 million Americans underwent surgical and nonsurgical procedures in 2006 alone. Stereotypically, having cosmetic surgery is a sign of vanity and status. However, for some, having surgery serves as a new beginning.

Redefining the Smile
In our daily lives few of us consider the simple facial expression known as a smile. Though for many children living in Guatemala, their grins are something that effects their whole perception of themselves.
Countless children in Guatemala are born with facial defects that prevent them from smiling. Reconstructive surgery is often the only way to help these children attain the ability to show expression in their face.
Giving the Gift of a Smile
There are several ways to help those in need throughout the year and board-certified plastic surgeon Sarah W. Holland of York Plastic Surgery and Aesthetic Center travels to Guatemala yearly to perform free reconstructive surgery on children in need.
Holland travels with the non-profit organization, Children of the Americas, which provides free medical and surgical care to poor women and children.

Aging Without the Wrinkles

Friday, December 21st, 2007

Age is something that every one has to deal with at some point in life; however, according to some plastic surgeons, it’s how you deal with unwanted wrinkles that separate the average from the fabulous.

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery claims that people between the ages of 35-50 had the most procedures in 2006. Reports show that in 2006 alone, 5.3 million people within this age rage went under the knife for some tucking and enhancing.

Faced with Wrinkles

As we get older it’s unavoidable that the soft tissues of the body will lose volume, a phenomenon that typically happens most in the face and can be exaggerated by weight loss.

Research has shown that once wrinkles have set in, the only way to replace the lost volume, which will restore your youthful appearance, is through a cosmetic procedure.

“As we age, there is a loss of volume under the tissues and dental support which causes sagging skin in the lower part of the face and wrinkles,” explains Dr. Arnold Klein, a world renowned cosmetic dermatologist.

Tips to Creating a More Youthful Appearance

According to Dr. Klein, the appearance of your face is all about restoration, not renovation.  He offers the following tips to his patients to help them achieve a more youthful glow:

·    Have realistic expectations of your surgeon- Some doctors can make false promises and it’s important to know that, although surgeons can create beneficial outcomes, they can’t create miracles
·    Do your research- Understanding the different procedures and picking the right surgeon is essential in having an overall positive outcome in your surgery
·    Never settle for permanence- Doctors suggest that patients should never allow anything permanent to be injected into their face because permanent injections can often cause permanent problems

The Yoga Face

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

Men and women worldwide are constantly looking for that instant fix to alter their appearance, make it look more youthful, more alive. As the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reports, 11.5 million Americans went under the knife for some nipping and tucking in 2006.

Of these millions, 138,245 patients received facelifts. For those who don’t want to endure a facelift procedure to rid their most looked at asset of excess fat, wrinkles and skin, new reports claim that yoga for the face can do wonders.

Exercising the Face

Yoga for the face you ask? Well according to Marie Nadeau, author of the book “The Yoga Facelift: The All-Natural, Do-It-Yourself Program for Looking Younger and Feeling Better,” by becoming aware of your facial habits and exercising the 190 muscles that exist from the neckup, everyone can achieve a more radiant face.

Just as yoga helps to strengthen and tone the muscles in your body’s core, yoga for the face claims to do the same, while calming and relaxing you mentally.

However, as with most things, there is a catch.

Plastic Surgery Still in the Running

Even though face yoga has been proven to strengthen and somewhat tone the face’s muscles, face yoga teachers do admit that for those looking for a complete face makeover, just doing yoga may not do the trick.

Face yoga, as with normal yoga practices, works the body from the inside out; therefore for those looking to diminish wrinkles and define their cheekbones, plastic surgery just might be the only easy “fix” available.

Acupuncture: The Latest Cosmetic Craze?

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

The ancient Chinese medical practice of acupuncture has been used for treating various ailments for more than 2,000 years. However, it has only been in recent decades that the practice has gained popularity here in the U.S. Given the simultaneous rise in cosmetic procedures during that time, it’s no surprise that acupuncture is now being exploited for more than medicinal purposes.

Cosmetic acupuncture—specifically for treating facial lines and wrinkles—may just be the latest beauty craze. Touted for its ability to improve the overall health and appearance of skin, facial acupuncture looks like it might help some people delay surgical intervention.

Despite it’s ability to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, an “acupuncture facelift” isn’t for everyone. Results are not as immediate or dramatic as with traditional cosmetic facelifts. And there is always the issue of maintenance.

The bottom line: Cosmetic acupuncture is a practice that, like cosmetic surgery, requires skill and knowledge on the part of the practitioner. Whenever your health is at stake, always choose someone who knows what they’re doing!
